VietNamNet Bridge – “Ky nghe lay tay” (The industry of marrying Europeans) by Vietnamese famous writer Vu Trong Phung has been published in English by the faculty of Southeast Asian studies at Cornell University.
The translator is Tran Viet Thuy, a Vietnamese teacher at the university. She translated it 10 years ago while carrying out her master’s research.
After finishing her master’s studies, Thuy went to Cornell University to teach Vietnamese. Recently, encouraged by her colleagues at the university, Thuy decided to edit her translation of the book for publication under the Studies on Southeast Asia Series by Cornell University.
Regarding her research on the book, Thuy said she focused on the technique of using French and Vietnamese languages as second languages in a limited way to depict the situation of cultural mixing in the colonial period.
