From October 2005, HCM City artists have been preparing for performances for tourists.

Tran Huu Trang Cai Luong Theatre will perform a series of extracts of popular dramas like ‘Da Co Hoai Lang’, ‘Luc VanTien- Kieu Nguyet Nga’, and ‘Nam Xuong Woman’. Meanwhile, HCM City Art Performance Company prepares for a performance a traditional art performance named ‘Homeland’s Painting’, with 50 professional dancers, singers, and musicians.

30 artists of the HCM City Tuong Theatre (Vietnamese opera) are also practicing its own performance to serve tourists. Other art troupes such as puppets, Bong Sen, and the circus will also create performances for this plan.

Many troupes have finished their programs and have performed before HCMC authorities; however, the plan is facing difficulties as tourist companies seem to be little interested.

Le Nhat Tan, Deputy Director of HCM Tourism Department said local authorities are planning to develop the program in 2006. Kim Chau Theatre will be a regular destination for tourist performances, as well as displaying and selling handicraft products and artworks.

Foreign visitors’ opinions:

A.Warren, Australian tourist: Culture of Southeast Asia is various, especially Vietnam. I like the traditional stage performances for foreigners in Hoi An

Nigel, British visitor: I feel that Vietnam does not really care about stage performances for foreigners. The available traditional performances at hotels are not interesting.

Schoeder Peter, German visitor: Vietnam’s water puppets are funny and special. We were so interested in them. I will certainly tell my friends about them.
