Contestants at the Super Model Contest 2005.

After the Super Model Contest 2005 scandal when a call-girl was almost crowned, the Ministry of Culture and Information (MoCI) is more closely managing beauty contests.

Under MoCI Performing Department regulations, contestants’ personal identification must be examined before entering beauty contests, to discover if they relate to “social evils”, such as drug addiction or prostitution.

The examination will be conducted by organisers, in cooperation with police and local authorities.

Le Ngoc Cuong, Director of the Performing Department said: “We can not follow young beauties closely. Audience and media will be the most effective supervisors. Organisers will have to take responsibility if contestants are revealed”.

The regulation also stipulates local authorities to take part in organizing beauty contests, to avoid such occurrences.
