A huge mural depicting the history of Hanoi is expected to be completed before 2010 to mark the capital city’s 1,000th birthday.

Hoan Kiem Lake.

At 3m wide and 100m long, it will be the largest mural in Vietnam.

The painting will tell the 1,000-year history of Thang Long - Hanoi through the Ly, Tran, Le, Tay Son, Nguyen dynasties up to present, the wars of resistance against foreign invaders as well as the capital’s cultural and architectural characteristics.

The painting will be drawn along Hoang Dieu Road. The painting, together with the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and the Ba Dinh Square, will form an area of high value historically and culturally.

The painting will be protected by a roof, which will be shaped as a nine-section dragon. A small stream will run in front of the painting with three bridges.

It is possible that lacquer and stone will be the mural’s primary materials.

“This painting will show the thinking of the history of Thang Long is not a historical book,” said artist Ly Truc Son, who will draw the modern history part of the mural.
