Hanoi’s famous vermicelli-making village faces pollution

VietNamNet Bridge - Phu Do Village has been making rice vermicelli for more than 400 years. However, the traditional job has caused serious pollution in the village.

Every day the village produces nearly 80 tons of vermicelli, meeting half of the demand of the Hanoi market.

Water discharged from vermicelli making process contains a lot of starch. The water is discharged directly into the environment, causing pollution.

Waste residue in the process of making vermicelli is a major factor causing pollution.

Wastewater is discharged directly into the sewer system and then to the Nhue River.

In 2005 a wastewater treatment plant with a daily capacity of 84,000 m3 but the facility has stopped operation.

Mr. Nguyen Van Hoa (craft club chairman Phu Do vermicelli) said, since the village has made proposals to apply for rebuilding treatment plant clarifier and support construction for individual households, it has not yet ratified. Everything on paper is expected by 2020.

Currently, the village of Phu Do vermicelli production averages 50 tons of noodles / day, providing nearly half of the total market in Hanoi.

According to the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology, wastewater samples collected from the village contains high concentration of BOD, organic matter, nitrogen, and phosphorus, causing serious water pollution.
