Son did not win a medal, but his result of 15 minutes and 29.90 seconds is the new height for the national championships.

His result was also better than the record of the biennial Southeast Asian Games, which will be kicked off next month in Malaysia.

The previous national record of 15:30.11s was held by Nguyen Huy Hoang in last year’s tournament. The previously-held SEA Games record of 15:31.03s belonged to Vietnamese Lam Quang Nhat, which was set in Singapore in 2015.
