Illegal sand mining activities on Hồng (Red) River in northern Hưng Yên Province’s Hồng Châu Ward, as captured by VietnamPlus reporters on September 22.

Reports about illegal sand mining on the rivers in the province was reported recently by VietnamPlus.

In a document sent to the Committee on October 4, the Deputy PM asked the members, together with authorised agencies, to quickly revise the situation and strictly fine violators. The outcome must be reported to the government before October 15.

Recently, VietnamPlus had reported that illegal sand mining was rampant on Hồng and Luộc rivers in Hưng Yên Province, despite the government’s efforts to ban all illegal sand exploitation activities and stop granting licences for sand exploitation on the rivers.

Illegal sand mining, conducted by large vessels, was occurring during the day, and even at nights, causing erosion and threatening the lives of the local people. The locals had sent petitions to the relevant city and province authorities but the situation has not been improved.

On September 22, VietnamPlus reporters, in co-operation with the working team of Hồng Châu Ward’s People’s Committee, had visited the area in the Red River where sand mining was taking place, and recorded illegal activities there.

Reporters contacted the provincial Waterway Traffic Police for more information, but they refused to comment.
