On April 2, 460 of the 465 lawmakers (or 93.12% of the total number of National Assembly deputies) approved a resolution on State President election and Mr Tran Dai Quang was elected as the new State leader.

In the swearing-in ceremony on April 2,  newly-elected State leader Tran Dai Quang pledged absolute loyalty to the fatherland, the people and the Constitution of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

“I promise to make every effort to well fulfill the tasks assigned by the Party, State and people”, he said.

In a speech after the swearing-in ceremony, the newly-elected President thanked the National Assembly for electing him as State leader and extending best wishes to him.

With the honor, the great responsibility of the head of State, the President vowed to do his best to serve the country and the people.

"To inherit and uphold the national tradition of safeguarding the nation and experience of the predecessors, I pledged my best efforts to reinforce national unity, protect sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country for national interests and security, continue to boost the Doi Moi (Renewal) and international integration process to promote Vietnam’s international profile,” he said.

Quang also expressed sincere thanks to former State President Truong Tan Sang and his predecessors who have made great contributions to national construction and development and wholeheartedly served the country and the people.

Born in 1956, Mr Quang was a deputy in the 13th National Assembly and holds a law professorship.

He was Director of the Security Consultation Department, Deputy Director and Director of the Security Department, Deputy Minister of Public Security, member of the 10th, 11th, and 12th Party Central Committee, member of the politburo of the 11th Party Central Committee, and Minister of Public Security.
