Tourism island waste treatment plant faces tribulations

A VND30 billion (USD1.36-million) waste treatment plant on Co To Island has yet to begin its full operation despite its construction being completed years ago.

The project which was started in 2011 on an area of 4.65 hectares in Dong Tien Commune has a total capacity of 7.2 tonnes per day.

At that time, this was modern waste treatment.

Near the plant is a big dumping which is full of rubbish with bad smell. The rubbish even overflows onto the road.

Despite being installed with modern equipment, the plant has not yet officially began operation due to some difficulties. Piles of rubbish are still taken to the plant, however, they are still waiting to be processed.

According to district leader, rubbish classification is a problem due to the financial difficulties, which has affected the plant’s operation.

Hoang Ba Nam, secretary and chairman of Co To District, said that up to 90% of the project has been finished, but it was still being piloted. On ordinary days, the plant operates two hours per day and four to eight hours per day during tourism season.

Nam admitted rubbish classification to be among major problems affecting the project. He added that the district had encouraged local households to classify the rubbish by themselves.

Meanwhile, an official from Quang Ninh Province said that the plant was facing some technical problems which were expected to be settled by the end of this year.

Over the recent years, Co To Island has become an attractive destination for tourists.
