Near Tet, farmers still work in the fields in cold

VietNamNet Bridge – Farmers in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue still plough, sow seeds and transplant rice seedlings for the fifth-month crop in very cold weather. Many people have to wear raincoats or drink hot tea to keep their bodies warm.

From the early morning, farmers in Phu Vang, Huong Tra, Phu Loc districts of

Thua Thien-Hue province work in the field.

Farmers and their buffaloes work in rain and cold. This buffalo

sometimes pauses because of cold.

The field is quickly covered by rice seedlings. It is very cold so transplanters

have to wear raincoats and masks. In recent years, some families have had

to hire transplanters. These workers earn highly, around VND200,000 ($10) a day.

Some people have to warm up their bodies by hot tea.

This man says that though it is cold, all farmers want to finish rice transplantation

before Tet holiday, which will come this weekend.
