VietNamNet Bridge – Universities releasing enrolment plans for 2010 are rushing to provide more fashionable study options.

Many member universities of the HCM City National University have announced new study options, including a medical faculty which plans to enroll 100 students in 2010.

Dr Pham Tan Ha, deputy head of the Training Division of the HCM City University of Social Sciences and Humanity under the HCM City National University, said that the university is seeking permission to provide training in four new areas: Spanish philology, Japan studies, South Korea studies and tourism.

To date, the first three study branches have been part of the Orientalism Faculty, but they are expected to become independent study branches. Similarly, tourism has been a study branch of Geography Faculty, but is expected to become an independent branch.

It seems that doors to universities will be opened wider in 2010. The HCM City University of Natural Sciences, for example, will enroll students who take A-group exams (mathematics, physics and chemistry) as well for the biology faculty, while it only accepted B-group students who sit the mathematics, chemistry and biology, in previous years

The HCM City University of Technical Education said it will accept both C (literature, history and geography) and D-group students (mathematics, literature and foreign languages) for its philology faculty.  Iinformation technology training, which previously only accepted A groupers, will also enroll students who take D-group exams, even though D-group is considered the exam group for social sciences only.

Universities changing their minds

There are several noteworthy items in the enrolment plans of universities for 2010. Schools are not tending to open more study branches relating to economics and finance. They feel that the demand for these study branches, which were once considered the hottest around, have become saturated

The fact that schools plan to accept students from different exam groups show that they want to offer more choices.

Meanwhile, Saigon International University plans to enroll students from all over the country instead of just students in HCM City and neighboring provinces.

Explaining this, the university’s representative said that the university wants to select the best students in order to improve the qualification of graduates

“In order to have better training quality, we need to change our mindset,” said My Giang Son, head of the Training Division of the university.
