VietNamNet Bridge – An overwhelming majority of Vietnamese students want to only study IT or electronics, considered ‘fashionable branches of learning’, but are indifferent or avoidant of other subjects, despite their inherent capability.
Tran Minh Duc, Lecturer of the Economics Faculty at HCM City Economics University, said the university cannot always enroll enough students for economics, though the entrance exam score requirements are not steep.
According to Mr. Duc, Vietnamese students are indifferent to this branch of learning, though the demand is high, and growing. The university instead has to accept students who selected economics as their second choice (under current regulations, students can register to study at two universities at maximum, i.e they have two choices. If they cannot pass the exam to be eligible to study at their first choice, they can study at their other choice, provided their scores can meet the requirement).
Unattractive education
Tran Dinh Ly, Master, Director of the Center for Supporting Students under the HCM City Agriculture and Forestry University, said the forestry product processing industry is now developing strongly needs more and more workers to maintain supply. Enterprises are ready to pay high salaries, but they find it very difficult to find qualified empoyees.
Mr Ly said over ten enterprises are trying to recruit forestry product processing engineers, but are unable.
Similarly, enterprises are offering initial pay of VND3-4mil for newly graduated students who studied seafood processing, relatively high when compared to other business fields. However, very few students want to become seafood processors.
A generation of dull scientists
According to Dr Nguyen Kim Quang, Deputy Head of the Training Division under the HCM City Natural Sciences University under the HCM City National University, the institutional cannot enroll enough students for oceanography and hydrometeorology. In fact, the students who do enroll in these subjects are not often good students because the enrollment standards are quite low.
In terms of basic technologies like power, material technology and mechanics, they are also facing the same problem. Students prefer studying other technologies, including information technology (IT) or electronics to the above mentioned branches.
“Many important branches of learning are facing the regrettable indifference from students that stem from their misconceptions,” said Mr Quang. A lot of good students say ‘no’ to the branches of learning that most need capable students.

Branches of learning which offer students good post-graduate employment opportunities
According to Phan Hieu Liem, Headmaster of the HCM City Social Labor University, the insurance sector is now needs a big sum of staffs after a lot of insurance companies were set up.
Textile and garment industry is now considered one of the key industries in the industrialization and modernization process in Vietnam. Hundreds of textile and garment companies, both domestic and foreign invested, in export processing zones and industrial zones, need manpower. Most of graduated students can find good jobs in garment and fashion companies. However textile and garment branch of learning always ranks at the bottom of the list of biggest choices of students.
Vietnam also needs a lot of new veterinarians as animal husbandry is rapidly increasing
