| Phu Quoc Island | VietNamNet Bridge - The People’s Committee of Kien Giang Province has asked the Ministry of Planning and Investment (MPI) for permission to open some more international air routes from Phu Quoc Airport while waiting for the construction of Duong To Airport.
Suggested air routes include those from Phu Quoc Airport to regional countries like Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Singapore.
Duong To Airport is one of the most important projects in the master development plan of Phu Quoc Island, which was approved by the Prime Minister. Three groups from Vietnam, the US, Germany and the UK have registered to invest in this project.
According to plan, Duong To Airport, which will be able to serve Boeings 767s, will be built on 800ha of land with investment capital of VND2,500-3,000 billion ($156.25 million - $187.5 million). The airport will be able to serve around 1 million passengers a year.
The regulations on the organisation and operations of Phu Quoc Island, which was issued by the Prime Minister in February 2007, allow Phu Quoc District to open an international sea border gate at An Thoi Port and an air border gate at Duong To Airport to connect with some countries in the region.
