VietNamNet Bridge – Another H5N1 patient from the northern province of Ninh Binh died on February 25 after 20 days with the flu.

This man, 32, from Village 12, Kim Tan Ward, Kim Son District, Ninh Binh province was detected with the first symptoms of avian influenza (fever, breathing problems) on February 5.

He was treated himself at home with antibiotics and febrifuge, but the situation did not improve. On February 13, he went to the Army Hospital 5 for examination and was immediately brought to the Hanoi-based National Infectious and Tropical Disease Hospital. Tests showed that the man was infected with type A/H5N1 virus.

The man worked in the south, and just returned home before the lunar New Year holiday. He slaughtered and ate sick chickens with his family.

The local health workers disinfected the patient’s house and the site where the patient was buried. Some 43 related people are under close watch.

This is the second type A/H5N1 patients reported in Vietnam so far this year and both of them died. Since 2003, when the first H5N1 patient was detected in Vietnam, the country has had 110 cases, including 55 deaths.

The Veterinary Agency under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development on February 26 reported that bird flu was founded in two new communes of the southern province of Ca Mau, one more commune in the southern province of Soc Trang and one in the southern province of Bac Lieu.

At present, there are 11 provinces with bird flu, namely Ca Mau, Soc Trang, Nghe An, Hau Giang, Quang Ninh, Quang Tri, Bac Ninh, Bac Lieu, Khanh Hoa, Ninh Binh and Dien Bien.
